Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Define epilepsy and differentiate epilepsy from a seizure.

2 Discuss 3 exams and tests used to diagnose epilepsy, and their relevance to the diagnostic process.

3. Discuss at least 3 non-pharmacologic interventions for epilepsy.

4. Explain the difference between epilepsy and non-epileptic seizures and state the “gold standard” test to differentiate the 2 conditions.

5. State at least 5 psychiatric symptoms associated with non-epileptic seizures and formulate treatment approaches to decrease or eradicate non-epileptic seizures.


About Dr. Austin

Dr. Austin is a Clinical Psychologist with specialties in Neuropsychology, Geropsychology, and Sport Psychology. Prior to attending graduate school, she worked in the area of Clinical Neurophysiology, including at the Regional Epilepsy Center at the Harborview Medical Center of the University of Washington, where she supervised the EEG and Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory. At the Epilepsy Center, she became interested in non-epileptic seizures, which later became the focus of her dissertation, conducted through the Northern California Epilepsy Center at the University of California at San Francisco. She provides guest lectures and consultation on epilepsy and non-epileptic seizures, safety management techniques, and other topics to mental health providers and trainees. Dr. Austin has worked in physical rehabilitation settings and on the HIV Units at St. Mary’s Medical Center (SMMC) and at Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center (LHH) in San Francisco, CA. She is the former Director of Training for the LHH Psychology Training, a Past-President of the Northern California Neuropsychology Forum (NCNF), Former Co-Chair of the Professional Affairs and Information Committee of the National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN), and is a NAN Fellow. She is a graduate of The Wright Institute in Berkeley, California.
