Cultural Considerations in NP applications in HIV: A Reflection on Psychometry with clinical implications for treatment, with Dr. Desiree Byrd
Wednesday July 14th
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Online Webinar: Live and Interactive
Dr. Desiree Byrd is an associate professor with Queens College and is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist. Dr. Byrd received her PhD from the University of California San Diego/San Diego State University. Her research interests are cross-cultural neuropsychology and Neuro HIV and focuses on the roles of health disparities and cultural identity in normal cognitive aging and in the expression of cognitive dysfunction stemming from central nervous system disease. She is currently serving as the member at large for the International Society of Neuropsychology.
Neuropsychologists have long used various standardized methods to assess the ability or level of functioning of their patients. What happens when those standardized tools don’t adequately represent the full range of populations being served? In this session we will discuss the importance of cultural considerations in neuropsychological applications in HIV. Additionally, we will explore and understand the challenges/ limitations of psychometry and the solutions that can be applied.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Articulate the enhanced value of at least three psychometric principles in the application of neuropsychological tests used with clients with minoritized identities.
2. Identify research and clinical opportunities that can be applied in response to the practice challenges presented by cross-cultural evaluations.
3. Explain how the human immunodeficiency virus exerts change in the central nervous system and cognitive functioning.
